FRAY LUIS DE LEÓN SECONDARY SCHOOL. LAS PEDROÑERAS. CUENCA.

The building is an extension of the original secondary school, which was also designed by the practice in an earlier phase.
The new structure is conceived as a physical continuation of the existing two-storey building connected via walkways yet leaving a shaded, sheltered space inspired by the traditional courtyards of La Mancha houses.

A linear design allows for natural dual-aspect light and cross ventilation—an essential feature in this type of school layout.

Positioned parallel to the original structure, the new building leaves a generous open space at the rear of the site for sports and recreation areas, making the most efficient use of the available plot.
The three-storey building is wrapped in a curvilinear form that responds well to the spatial requirements and contrasts with neighbouring buildings, lending the new structure a light, dynamic, and distinctive character within an otherwise unremarkable urban setting.

Locally appropriate, low-maintenance materials are used for the façades: brightly coloured renders, prefabricated concrete panels, and metal cladding in specific areas and on the roof, offering an abstract reinterpretation of the large agricultural sheds typical of the surrounding landscape.
